It’s official! The leaves have changed color, the days are growing shorter, and winter is on its way. Fall is arguably the most beautiful season in our temperate climate. It is a reminder to cool off, let go and prepare for winter. As the seasons change, our physiology also changes. From fall to winter our skin might become irritated, start to dry out or crack, our joints may be sore, we may be more prone to inflammation... The bottom line is that adjusting your skincare routine with every season is necessary if you want to put your best face forward.
Good news! This week’s blog coincides with a new product launch: the winter skincare box. Let me explain to you what it is and why you need it!
Four top tips for transitioning skin to fall
Tip 1: Exfoliate gently
Removing dead skin cells and unclogging pores adds to a glowing complexion. Exfoliation is important for skin health all year round. But in cooler weather, it is especially important not to overdo it and leave your skin depleted & vulnerable to the harsh elements. During the colder months, opt for a gentle exfoliator about once a week.
Product choice: Organic Oatmeal Scrub
Oats are skin-soothing and lightly exfoliating, while almond oil heals and protects. My scrub also contains a pinch of pink Himalayan salt and Vitamin E oil. It’s perfect for keeping dry winter skin at bay- face or body.
Tip 2: Calm redness
When skin is exposed to low temperatures, the body attempts to warm itself. Blood vessels close to the surface widen, which circulates more blood to the affected area. This can cause areas like our cheeks to flush in the cold. Having a product to soothe that redness, calm inflammation and hydrate is a must for the winter months.
Product choice: Hemp + Honey Serum
Hemp seed oil is anti-inflammatory, hydrating and non-comedogenic (won’t clog pores). This serum also contains apricot kernel oil to improve skin tone, and a touch of local raw honey & gardenia essential oil for deep hydration and antiseptic/antibacterial properties.
Tip 3: Use a richer moisturizer
Skin is more prone to drying out in cooler weather, when lower humidity draws moisture away from the skin. That is why it is important to use a more rich, emollient skincare product during this time of year. Even better than your average moisturizer? Balms are thicker than your average moisturizing cream. They have the ability to simultaneously nourish your skin and protect it from external conditions.
Product choice: Apricot + Carrot Seed Balm
My apricot + carrot seed balm is an all-purpose balm that contains a trifecta of skincare superheroes: rosehip, jojoba and apricot kernel oil. Also carrot seed essential oil and triple filtered USDA certified organic cosmetic grade white beeswax. This was the first product that I made, and it’s still around for a reason! Tip 4: Up your PM skincare
Just like we need to layer up on clothing to keep warm during the colder months, your skin also needs that extra effort to stay healthy. Consider adding to your PM routine, since skincare products work more effectively at night when our skin has a chance to rest and replenish.
Product choice: PM Natural Moisturizer
Black cumin seed, hemp seed and calendula oils are all prized in skincare for their powerful restorative properties. This product contains all three! Plus shea butter (a.k.a. ‘superfood for the skin’) and lavender & bergamot essential oils to ease inflammation and unclog pores. And it smells amazing!
